WMS Performance Attendance Policy
A performing ensemble is a group who works together every day, and it is incredibly important to both the pride and success of individual performers and the group as a whole that all students are present at performances.
All performances notated with an asterisk on the performance calendar are required. Excused absences include illness, emergency, or events of singular significance (wedding, funeral, etc.).
Concerts are graded summative assessments and considered co-curricular. If a student has an extra curricular conflict they are expected to be at the concert for their portion of the performance, but are free to arrive late or leave early. If a student has a conflict with a performance the student and parent/guardian should reach out to the teacher at least two weeks in advance so the teacher and family can work together on a plan where the student can be successful at both events.
For an unexcused absence the student will need to record a video of them performing the concert music to receive a grade for the concert. If the student does not submit a recording they will receive an “Incomplete” for their semester grade instead of a letter grade. Unexcused absences from performances can also impact future awards, specialty instrument choices, and leadership positions.
